If they are under 19 or under 24 and a full time student you can still claim them.

You don't include their income on your return. It would only go on their return if they are required to file one.  They don't have to file if they only have Social Security or W2 income under 12,550 but can file to get back any withholding taken out in boxes 2 or 17.  But you don't get boxes 4 or 6 back.   If they got a 1099NEC for it they do have to file a tax return for it.

To file a separate return for a dependent in the Online version you need to set up a new account separate from yours.  Online is only good for one return per account.  You can use the same email address for 5 accounts.  You can probably use the Free Edition

Be sure on the dependent return you check the box that says you can be claimed on someone else’s return.  If their only income is W2 and under 12,550 they do not have to file a return except to get back any withholding taken out.

No, do not enter his W2 on your return.   He would file his own tax return if he wants but it is not necessary.

If a child has both earned and unearned income, that child must file a return for 2021 if: unearned income is over $1,100. earned income is over $12,550, or. earned and unearned income together totals more than the larger of (1) $1,100, or (2) total earned income (up to $12,200) plus $350.

@dri - let me try and simplify.

1) 16 year old's w-2 does NOT go on your tax return; never, under any circumstance.

2) assuming there is no other income, then there is no requirement to file

3) if there are withholdings on that paycheck, then the only way to get the money back is to file (but if you don't want to go through the hassle for a small amount of money, you don't have to, the IRS is happy to keep it!)

At this income level, the state filing requirement is probably the same, but check your state's website.
