No you don't have to sign or pay for an Online return just to test. So don't go too far like in the Filing tab.
FYI- If you used the Desktop program before you may notice several differences and not like the online version. It has less features and no Forms Mode. And you will have to pay first to see all the forms. All the Online versions do not have the same forms so you may need to upgrade to a higher version. Online Premium is the highest vesion and has all the same forms as the Desktop programs. You can only do 1 return per account. And pay for each account. Federal and state are separate fees.
An e-filed tax return does not have a physical signature. The prior tax year AGI entered which is associated with your Social Security Number is your electronic signature.

If you already e-filed a 2025 tax return using desktop software and that return was accepted, you cannot file another 2025 tax return using your SSN.
