Do I have to be paying estimated taxes to CA for 2018 to apply 2017 refund to the it?

How will it show on my 2018 return if I apply 2017 refund to it? I do not pay any estimated taxes to state/fed.

No, you do not need to pay 2018 estimated taxes to CA FTB to apply your 2017 state tax refund. If you apply your 2017 CA state tax refund to your 2018 state taxes, it should be reported on your 2018 CA State Form 540 on a similar line as CA State 540 Form Line 72 2017 CA estimated tax and other payments.

If you want to add, edit, or delete a CA state refund (overpayment) of state taxes for next year, the navigation is located in the state area of the program. Please review the following instructions for more information:

  1. If you are using TurboTax CD/Download, open appropriate tax return.
  2. On the top, select STATE TAXES tab.
  3. On the Let's work on your state return screen, select Continue.
  4. On the Your State Returns screen, select Start/Edit on California.
  5. If you have not gone through the CA state tax screens yet, answer questions and select Continue to the A few things before we wrap up your state taxes screen.
  6. If you have already gone through the CA state tax screens, on the Your 2017 California taxes are ready for us to check screen, select Start/Edit on Other situations.
  7. On the A few things before we wrap up your state taxes screen, under Other situations, select Start/Revisit on Apply Refund to Next Year. See attached screenshot. Please note this section may not be available (visible) if you do not have a refund (overpayment) and instead owe taxes.
