Head of Household as a filing status has nothing to do with home ownership. Filing as HOH means she says she supported a qualified dependent and paid for over half the support of the household.
You say you owned a home if your name is on the mortgage or deed and you paid the mortgage payments or property taxes. If your GF already entered all of the home ownership expenses you cannot use them too or that would be double dipping.
Either one of you enters it, or you can divide it up by who paid what---but you cannot claim over 100% of the mortgage interest or property taxes between the two of you.
Wow, thank you so much!! Very helpful.
Answering that question with a 'yes' or 'no' has no effect on your filing status or your fiance's filing status of Head of Household.
The purpose is to prompt you to enter possible deductions related to homeownership such as mortgage interest or property taxes. So, if you intend to try to claim those deductions, answer 'yes' that you owned a home in 2021.
The answer to the question is not included as part of your tax return, it is simply used by TurboTax to guide you through the program.
