My wife (an educator) did some freelance work for another school district and earned $500. We didn't receive a 1099-NEC, because it didn't meet the $600 threshold. The only instructions I can find on this site, says I need to enter the $500 as business income, which requires me to enter a bunch of info for a business that doesn't exist.
So my question is... If she earned $600 and received a 1099, it's one screen/enter one form. Easy, done.
But if it's under $500, I need to go through an entire Schedule C interview, create a "business," and enter it as income for that business? For a smaller amount of money? That doesn't make any sense.
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
Yes, you need to go through an entire Schedule C interview, create a "business," and enter it as income for that business.
Self employment income is subject to self employment tax beginning at $400. If there are expenses for her freelance work, then the net profit would be less however you must use the Schedule C to show that. If there were no expenses, then that income will be subject to the self employment tax as shown below, as well as personal income tax.
The self employment net profit is first allowed to be reduced for 7.65% (1.0 - .0765 = .9235), this is then multiplied by the net profit to arrive at the amount subject to self employment tax ($500 x .9235= $462). The balance is taxed as follows:
As you can see that is $71 dollars of self employment tax which must be completed on the Schedule C and Schedule SE to accurately reflect and compute the tax.
That is self employment income. Even if it was more and you got a 1099NEC you still would need to go through the Schedule C section and fill out your info.
Sole proprietor, self employed, independent contractor, freelance, etc. are all the same thing. You are self employed and have to fill out schedule C for business income. You don't have to have an official business set up. You and the business are one and the same. YOU are the business.
Just enter it as Other self employment income or as Cash or General income. You don't need to get a 1099NEC or 1099K. Even if you did you can enter all your income as Cash. Only the total goes to schedule C.
You can enter Self Employment Income into Online Deluxe or Premier but if you have any expenses you will have to upgrade to the Self Employed version. Or use any of the Desktop CD/Download programs.
How to enter income from Self Employment
It's obviously my first time with this sort of income. I very much appreciate everyone's help, my head is on straight now.
Thanks again!
