TurboTax uses the appropriate method for computing the tax from one of the following:

  • Tax Table;
  • Tax Computation Worksheet;
  • Schedule D Tax Worksheet;
  • Qualified Dividends and Capital Gain Tax Worksheet;
  • Schedule J;
  • Form 8615; or
  • Foreign Earned Income Tax Worksheet.

To see the method used to calculate your taxes, go to the Federal 1040 and look at the Tax Smart Worksheet below line 43 of the 1040. To do this:

  1. While in your return, click My Account (in the blue bar at the top of the screen).  (See Screenshot #1, below.)
  2. Click on Tools.
  3. Under "Other helpful links" click on View Tax Summary. (Screenshot #2)
  4. Click on the Preview my 1040 link at the top of the screen.  (Screenshot #3)
  5. Using the scroll bar at the side of the 1040 window, scroll to line 43.  You will see the Tax Smart Worksheet below the line, with a circle marking the method used to calculated your tax.  (Screenshot #4)
  6. To go back to your return, click on the Back link at the top of the screen.
