Due to IRS adding new changes within the Schedules, there are now situations in which an upgrade may be needed. You are able to begin your tax return using TurboTax Free, but if you do not qualify for TurboTax Free, you will be prompted to upgrade.
Please see the following link for tax situations covered in TurboTax Free Edition.
If you don't qualify for TurboTax Free Edition, you may qualify for TurboTax Free File Program.
Here is more information on TurboTax Free File Program.

You can follow the instructions in the following FAQ to switch to the Free File Program.
TurboTax is so misleading. Not only do they continuously brag about being "free free free" they use their program to try to trick you into paying more. When you select your payment option and choose to have your fee taken from your refund, the program waits until you have already selected this option and moved on to tell you that they will charge you even MORE for this option which is ridiculous in itself. I have never heard of anybody using TurboTax for free. Each year I am more disappointed with TurboTax. I would be happy with paying for their services if they weren't blatantly lying to their consumers.
We have a lot of customers who are able to file with the TurboTax free edition at no charge if they qualify. I am attaching a link below where shows which product should be used for certain tax forms in different situations. TurboTax never forces you to file at the end if you are not happy. You can always start entering information for FREE and pay at the end if you are satisfied. I understand your confusion and frustration and hope the attached information will help.

I switched to File free thru the IRS and halfway thru they said I didn't qualify even tho I was below the AGI maximum. I don't understand why they advertise that if it's not true.
Be sure you are using the program through the IRS site.
