Dependent Removal

My 18 year old son worked full time and attended college full time this year. I initially claimed him as a dependent and filed.  Now we realize it is more beneficial for me to NOT claim him and he claim himself with the new college tax laws. I filed an amended return and removed him as a dependent from my return, which the IRS and NY State both accepted. I paid back the tax difference to the IRS and NY State.

But when my son files his return it is still getting rejected by both the IRS and NY State saying his SSN is still being claimed on another return.

Is this just something we have to wait for the IRS to process? If so how long or should we reach out and contact them? My son is due a refund from both so I'm not worried about penalties.

Thanks ...

Your amended return  can take up to 20 weeks or more for the IRS to fully process, and until it’s finalized, your son’s SSN still shows as claimed. Your son has two options: wait and re-file electronically later, or print, sign, and mail his return now, which the IRS will manually review and override once they see your amendment.

The IRS confirms amended returns take time to update dependency records, so mailing is usually the fastest workaround for refunds.
