Deleting entry on line 36 of form 1040

My printed 1040 form shows a figure of $6021 on line 36 which is not correct because I owe a federal tax of $5741. However I can't change line 36 to zero using the software with the "Apply Refund to Next Year" form because the software shows that I don't have a refund. How can I change the $6021 on line 36 of form 1040 to zero?

Let's start at the top.

  • Do you have a positive number in box 34?
    • This is your refund amount.
  • Line 35 is the amount of that refund you want to get back with this return.
    • Most people want all of it.
  • If line 34 (your refund) is larger than line 35 (refund you with back with this return).
    • You will get the entry in line 36 Amount you want to be applied to your 2022 estimated taxes.

If you didn't have a refund on line 34.  You should have an amount you owe on line 37.

If the question is asked "Apply Refund to Next Year"  you should leave it blank, or enter "0".

Here are the answers to your questions:

Line 34 is blank on form 1040.

Line 35 is also blank on form 1040

Line 36 shows $6201 on form 1040

Line 37 shows $5741 on form 1040

When I made a first pass thru TurboTax I did not have all my tax information and I was going to get a refund of $6021 which I elected to apply to 2022 estimated taxes.  When I updated TurboTax with the rest of my tax information, the situation changed and now I owe a tax payment of $5741 but the $6021 refund still exists on line 36 of tax form 1040.

To change the amount of federal refund applied to next year:

  1. Type "apply federal refund to next year"
  2. Select "Jump to apply federal refund to next year"
  3. On Apply How Much? clear the amount from the box

Applying your refund to next year will reduce your current refund and give you a credit for tax paid on next year's return.

This can reduce or eliminate the amount of quarterly payments for taxpayers who pay estimated taxes.
