I've done this several years now with no problem. For some reason, this time while attempting to put in 1099 misc income for 2017, the previous years numbers stay visible on line 7. I'm concerned it'll credit me with twice the income. Should this be happening?

I'm not sure what you mean by, "previous years numbers stay visible on line 7."  I assume that we are talking about a data entry for Box 7 on a 1099-MISC.  You should be able to enter this year's correct number. In any case, you can inspect your Form 1040 (Forms View) to see where the entry is going.  If you entered this as business income, then you should get data on Schedule C and the Schedule C data (with other business adjustments such as expenses, etc. ) should end up being transferred to Form 1040 Line 12.  If the 1099-MISC is entered with answers such that it is not business income, then the data entry should end up on Form 1040 Line 21.  You should not have any double income entry.  If you do, then delete the offending 1099-MISC or Schedule C, and then check or reenter data as needed.
