Costs of e-filing my federal and state return when using Turbo Tax Online

I have a PC that has Windows 10 on it and can't be upgraded to Windows 11. The 2025 Turbo Tax PC-based software only operates with Windows 11. So, I'm going to use the Turbo Tax Online program for my 2025 federal and state tax returns. I'll e-file both federal and state returns after 3/31/26, but before 4/15/26. I believe the cost of the Turbo Tax Online "Deluxe" version will be $79. Is that correct? The actual e-filing of the federal return should be free. Is that correct? Also, what will the cost of e-filing my associated state return be? I'm a bit confused by Turbo Tax's advertised prices. Thanks.

Costs of e-filing my federal and state return when using Turbo Tax Online

Did you already buy the desktop software then found you can't install it?   If so, at the bottom of this posting I will tell you how you can move to TurboTax Online Premium Edition for no extra fee, and you will get 1 Federal return and 1state return if you file by April 16.   There is no efiling fee in Online TurboTax.

Be aware that Online TurboTax is only good for 1 Federal return per account.  If you have to prepare more than 1 Federal return such as for family, you would need multiple accounts and separate fees.  And unlike the desktop software there is no Forms Mode for direct viewing/editing of forms.

If you haven't bought desktop software, and just start out on your own in Online TurboTax, the fee for Online Deluxe after 3/31/2026 is showing at $79 for Federal.    A state return is showing at $64 after 3/31/2026.  There is no efiling fee in Online TurboTax.   So with both returns that would total $143 for Deluxe, plus possible sales tax.

NOTE:  You may or may not be able to use Online Deluxe.  If you are accustomed to desktop Deluxe, be aware that Online Deluxe cannot handle everything.    It cannot prepare Schedule C with expenses, Schedule D (gains/losses from stocks/bonds/mutual funds, etc.), Schedule E (rental/royalty), Schedule F (Farm), and cannot enter information from a K-1.    If you have any of those things,  you would need Premium Edition, which after 3/31/2026 would be $139 for Federal return and $64 for a state return.

If you already bought desktop software and discovered that you can't install it, see this FAQ below about a special migration offer.  When you try to install the 2025 software on a Windows 10 computer, you should get a screen saying it cannot be installed on Windows 10, and it will ask you if you want to move to  Online TurboTax instead for 1 Federal return and 1 state return at no additional fee if you file by April 16.  See the info in this FAQ:
