Confused about 1099-nec (no registered business)

Good afternoon! I file married/jointly. My husband received two separate 1099-nec forms and i received one 1099-nec form. I entered this information (desktop version) under personal income under the Other Common Income tab for "income from form 1099-nec". It appears TT automatically initiates a schedule C from these entries in the Business Income and Expenses tab but i do not have a business.

Is it treating each 1099-nec form as a sole proprietor? I feel as if I'm entering the income twice. Also, the "income from form 1099-nec" section displays $0 despite my entries and the "profit or loss from business"  section displays Needs Review.

Confused about 1099-nec (no registered business)

The 1099-NEC is considered a business income form but that isn't always the case. Delete the forms you have.

  • If they are for a business, they should be entered inside the business, as income.
  • If they are not for a business, follow these steps:
  1. Open your return to the federal income section
  2. Select income from Form 1099-NEC
  3. Enter the information from your form
  4. Continue
  5. Describe the reason -mileage/ bonus/?
  6. Continue
  7. Does one of these uncommon situations apply?
  8. Select not earned, sporadic, hobby
  9. Continue
  10. See the NEC summary
  11. Done
