Canadian Social Security

Convert Canadian dollars to US dollars and add to your US social security. If no U.S. social security just report it as if it were that. If your state exempts social security income from tax you would have to add that income to your state return if your state doesn’t exempt Canadian social security which is likely.

Canadian Social Security

You will have to report your Canada Social Security Retirement income in TurboTax as if you received a Form SSA-1099-from the Social Security Administration.  They will be reported on line 6a of your Form 1040.

There are income tax treaties between the U.S. and Canada. Social Security benefits paid by Canada to U.S. residents are treated as if they were paid under the Social Security Administration of the U.S.

To enter your Canadian Social Security you will:

  1. Open your return.
  2. To go to the Social Security input screen you will:
    • If you are using TurboTax Online/Mobile: Go to SSA-1099.
    • If you are using TurboTax Desktop: Click on "Search" on the top right of your TurboTax screen and type "SSA-1099", then select the "Jump to SSA-1099"
  3. You will see the screen:" Did you receive Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits? select "Yes".
  4. You will see the screen "Tell us about the benefits you received", check the first box for Social Security benefits (Form SSA-1099).
  5. Enter the total Canadian CPP and OAS payments you received during 2024 in Box 5.
    • If you already have something in Box 5 from a previously entered SSA-1099, you will add your CPP/OAS benefits to the amount already there.
    • It would be uncommon for your Canada Social Security to have taxes withheld, but if they were, you would enter the total withheld during 2024 in Box 6.
  6. Select Continue and answer all follow-up screens

Your screens will look something like this:

Enter the total Canadian CPP and OAS payments you received during 2024 in Box 5.

These amounts will be entered on your Form 1040 in Box 6a.
