To clarify, since your wife passed, are you asking how to prepare a return since you have never done this before? If so, I would suggest to engage in the services of a local tax professional or open an account with Turbo Tax here. Once you register your account, there's an option to use our Live Tax Expert for additional help, which may be beneficial to you.
Before you start, you can call TurboTax's support number listed here and tell them your issue.. They can advise you on what to do to get started.
@mcgore83 I am so sorry for your loss.
First you may have answer a few questions ( and this I recognize may be painful , so please forgive the intrusion).
(a) Are you working or retired ? If retired is Social Security your only income ? Or do you have other income streams ? if not retired do you have W-2 or are you self-employed ?
(b) Assuming that you filed MFJ in 2023, are there dependents in your household ?
(c) When did you wife pass ? Is there a large Estate involved ? Do you have to go through probate -- your state generally dictates this ( the amount is lower than the federal requirements ).
for 2023 , did you file using TurboTax On-line or using downloaded Windows version ? Do you have access to your 2023 filing ( in paper form or otherwise )?
Please answer my questions. Then if I cannot help you sufficiently, I will call on other champs or experts -- yes ?
I know what you are going through , having lost my wife in 2024 .
