Can you help? I was told it would only cost $119 to file this year. I was to receive $929. I only received a Lil over $300. Can someone explain what's going on? Please?

There could have been an offset or correction made to your refund by the IRS.  For more information on this, please see the Help Article here for further assistance.  If you feel like none of the scenarios mentioned fits, please reach out to the IRS.

IRS: 800-829-1040

Hours: 7 AM - 7 PM, local time

Monday-Friday

  • Listen to each menu before making the selection.
  • First choose your language. Press 1 for English.
  • Then do NOT choose the first choice re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line.
  • Instead, press 2 for "personal income tax".
  • Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".
  • Then press 3 "for all other questions."
  • Then press 2 "for all other questions."  It should then transfer you to an agent.

Most likely, there was an offset on your refund or possibly the IRS is aware of income you did not report. Usually something like back child support, unpaid qualified student loans or a W-2 you didn't receive because the issuer did not have your correct mailing address.

If there was an offset for any reason, then you can expect to get a letter from the IRS in 3-5 weeks providing you all the details, plus instructions on what to do if you disagree with the IRS.
