I posted this question yesterday and received an answer. This person said that the message says that updates are being worked on and therefore you can't access the income category you need, like 1099R. This person goes on to say that TurboTax is working on the updates and hopes to make the Income Section available in a few days. I checked today and the message has come down and now you have access to the Income Section of TurboTax. So I scrolled down to the section: "Retirement Plans and Social Security." I then clicked on "update" for entering income information for 1099R. But when I clicked on "update" a box appears and says: "We recommend you revisit the last topic you were working on to make sure all your info is correct." So when I clicked on "Ok" it goes away and leaves me where I was working on my 1099R. I clicked on "update" and the same window reappears. What's going on? This message should take me back to the section I was working on that is missing info so that I can complete that section and move on. It appears I'm in some kind of loop.
Can anyone offer suggestions on what's going on? Frustrating!!! Thank you.

The Form 1099-R section was updated last night. 01/21/2026, for the online editions. If you are not seeing this on your account, clear cache and cookies on your web browser.
The Form 1099-R section was updated this morning, 01/22/2026, for the desktop editions. Click on Online at the top of the desktop program screen. Click on Check for Updates.
To enter, edit or delete a form 1099-R -
Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
Click on Wages and Income (Personal Income using Home and Business)
Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
Scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security
On IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R), click the start or update button
Apparently an update was done this morning 1/22 and it works for the desktop version. I checked it out and got all my info added in, so desktop version is working now.
01/22/26 supposed software fix for entering 1099R information does not work. Using Prime desktop version . Tried 3 days, very frustrating!
Not sure what to say, I logged on late 1/22 and saw all the notices that an update had happened in the morning. When i opened up turbotax it prompted me to do the updates and all worked fine. Was able to complete my return. Have you called their support? Not sure why your version is not working.
Follow these steps:
When I go to Online and select View installed updates, I show updates every few days. You will need all of the updates to continue.
Seem folks turn off their Desktop updates (like myself)...so that they control when they're done.
IF you haven't had your updates run yet......start the program and go up to the top Menu
click on
< Online
then <<Check for Updates
I tried all 5 steps and it says “Your software is up to date “. The screen “Who gave you a 1099-R?” does not respond when I click the square Financial institution or other provider (100-R)
Ok...you click on the box...nothing should happen right then
.....then scroll down the page to click on the blue "Continue" box
I typically bipass the import info and type in the requested info for each 1099. After that should carry over to next years return. go down to the continue button and move to the next page where you can enter in the info
this affects the online/browser version as well as of 3/1/2026. I entered my 1099-R, verified it shows up in the Income section, but when I have it generate the 1040, nothing shows up in 4a/4b at all.
Line 4a and 4b refer only to IRAs. Thus $$ may not show up unless you have the IRA/SIMPLE/SEP box checked on the software's 1099-R form...near box 7. That box must be checked
Even with a direct rollover, the $$ do appear in box 4a, as long as the IRA/SIMPLE/SEP box was checked on the form.
So I'm not sure what the problem is with yours if that is set

UNLESS....unless you uploaded a picture or PDF of that 1099-R form.
If you did that....delete it entirely and enter it manually..."Type it in myself"
Picture and PDF uploads of forms can result in all sorts of problems...(Opinion) Never do that until their software AI becomes flawless...it isn't.
That's exactly what happened..... I did an import from PDF. I did triple verify that each box from the PDF showed up exactly the same in Income, and even the amounts in the summary Income page are correct.
It was a taxable distribution from a Roth IRA after I accidentally over-contributed. I reversed the fund so I only had to pay the taxes (theoretically) on the gains and not the over-contribution.
It's baffling that even if the import 'worked', in reality behind the scenes it did not work and there is absolutely zero error detection in TT to detect this even after being reviewed by two separate TT live agents.
