Hey all,
I live in Florida, so I’m using the general sales tax deduction instead of state income tax for the federal SALT deduction. I also paid sales taxes in other states while traveling, including taxes and fees on rental cars and airline tickets. Can any portion of those taxes be included in the SALT sales tax deduction, or are they excluded because they are special travel or excise taxes?

@user17683222006 my two cents
SALT is "STATE" and "LOCAL" taxes. On the airline ticket, the taxes are FEDERAL so not deductible.
for the auto, those are fees and not taxes, so not deductible.
@NCperson Thanks for the response.
Got it.
For the rental car there is sales tax in addition to the fees, can i deduct those ?
@user17683222006 - no - it's already in the general tax calculation.
@NCperson What do you mean in general tax calculation ?
@user17683222006 you stated you are using the general sales tax calculation since you live in Florida. That calculation provides a sales tax deduction on Sch A as the IRS estimate of how much sales tax you paid over the course of the year on all purchases. that would include the rental car as a purchase.
