Can not efile 2025 tax return. Message says I didn’t file with Turbo Tax last year. Nonsense. Have email from Turbo Tax confirming 2024 efile. So what gives?.

Have to use the web as Turbo Tax for 2025 does not support Windows 10. You only find this out after buying the product. Used the product to file for a few years with no problem.

Turbo Tax doesn't know if you filed from the Desktop program.   In the Online version it only knows if you used Online last year too.

We have made it easy for our desktop customers to move to TurboTax Online and transfer their prior year tax information. Plus, we’re providing a special offer to our desktop customers: If you purchase TurboTax Desktop personal software for tax year 2025 and cannot install it because you have Windows 10, we have you covered. You will receive an in-product offer to switch to our TurboTax Online Premium service at no additional cost (includes one federal and one state return).


Be sure to have the 2024 return file ending in .tax2024 on your computer so you can transfer it into the online version next year.


If you used the Desktop program before you may notice several differences and not like the online version. It has less features and no Forms Mode. And you will have to pay first to see all the forms. All the Online versions do not have the same forms so you may need to upgrade to a higher version. Online Premium is the highest vesion and has all the same forms as the Desktop programs. You can only do 1 return per account. And pay for each account. You can use the same email for 5 accounts. Federal and state are separate fees.


Your return is only saved online so be sure to save both the .tax2025 data file and the pdf file to your computer when you are done. In case you need to amend in the future or if you need a copy to get a loan or something. You might not be able to access your online return when you need a copy.

Many thanks VolvoGirl for the detailed reply. I had wondered if that was the case. Seeing as when using the On-Line version, it obviously has access to all my 2024 efile information as it fills in the relevant details as usual. Including my bank information. I would consider the problem a bug.
I actually called the 1-800 number today, and spoke with a very knowledgeable and patient representative who resolved my problem, and I successfully submitted my efile, which was accepted.

I am having the same issue.  It appears I imported my 2024 tax file though from the prior desktop version.  How did the issue get resolved for you from the 1-800 number?  Thanks!

Sorry. I cannot remember the sequence the support persons directions took. I was focused on following his directions. I know he tried a few things. I do remember eventually selecting the “Download the forms and submitted them”, or something like that, from the erroneous message I originally posted. Hope that makes sense. 

As a suggestion, I would call the support number 1-800-446-8848. Once you get past the ridiculous voice recognition system, by responding “representative, representative “, you’ll get someone who will help you.

As I filled in my 2025 data using the On-line version, the program auto filled in fields correctly, so it obviously had access to my 2024 filing. So in my opinion there is a bug there that needs fixing.
