Can my sons father claim our son as a dependent if I was on food stamps for me and our son

I was on food stamps since April 2017 until the end of the year I didn't have a job so diapers and all and everything that wasn't food his father bought for more than half the year. Can his father claim him as a dependent or do I have to claim him since I told the government he was living with me?

If you do not file a tax return or do not claim the child he can claim the child.  If you file a return and are listing the child as a non-dependent, give him a signed Form 8332 to allow him to claim the child.
