TurboTax will automatically give you the better deduction on your Oregon tax return. You can't choose one or the other,
Oregon allows taxpayers to claim the higher deduction even if they chose a different deduction on federal.
Ernie, thanks for your reply. I get Turbo Tax automation convenience of selecting the best option. But, while the MFJ federal standard deduction of almost $25K is best there; itemizing on my Oregon return is the better option with deductions totaling almost $14K. You see it's not enough to surpass the federal standard deduction but far more than Oregon's standard limited to less than $7K.
Ernie, are you saying I could paper file my Oregon return (or use their Free File option) to claim state itemized, but still use Turbo Tax Free Edition to file federal?
If your AGI is less than $37,000, you are eligible to use the IRS Free File delivered by TurboTax for both Federal and Oregon.
Otherwise, yes, you can claim the standard deduction on your Federal return and claim itemized deductions on your Oregon state return.
