Are you referring to the 5 digit e-file pin or the 6 digit IP PIN (Identity Protection)?
The use of the e-file pin is being phased out by the IRS; they would prefer that you use last year's Adjusted Gross Income (AGI).
Note that the use of last year's pin or last year's AGI is a test to see if you are who you say you are - to reduce tax fraud. Making up a pin and using it in the same year would defeat that purpose.
The PIN you select for next year goes into the bit bucket if you don't e-File.
If you can't e-File, file on paper via US Mail. Make a note of your AGI amount.
