Can I use my deceased spouse's Turbo Tax account to help him file tax return for 2024?.

Context:

  • My spouse is American and has been using Turbo Tax to file tax return for a long time.
  • I am not a U.S. citizen/resident but I got an ITIN number. I don't live in the U. S.
  • We have been filing jointly since we got married.

Questions:

  1. Can I use his Turbo tax account to file the tax return this year? What do I need to pay attention to?
  2. How is the tax refund going to be delivered? I don't live in the U. S.
  3. Am I correct in that I don't need to file for tax to IRS in the future as I am not a U. S. citizen?

Looking forward to your feedback.

Can I use my deceased spouse's Turbo Tax account to help him file tax return for 2024?.

Yes, you can use the same TurboTax account you used to file your prior joint tax returns with your spouse to file your final return, provided you have the username and password.

When filing, you will want to be sure that you indicate that your spouse is deceased and provide the date of death where asked.  These questions will appear in the "My Info" interview section.

The refund will be eligible for direct deposit if you have a bank account in the United States.  The IRS doesn't currently offer direct deposit into foreign accounts.

The IRS mails tax refund checks to the address listed on the tax return and will deliver them to a foreign address if this is what you've entered into TurboTax.

In the future, you will only need to file a US tax return if you have US-source income, such as income from your deceased spouse's pension or other US-based income.  You would report US-source income earned as a nonresident on Form 1040-NR, which TurboTax does not support.  Should you need to file 1040-NR in the future, we recommend filing with SprinTax or a local professional in your area.

My sincere condolences on the loss of your spouse.

Thank you so much for your clear response, Susan.@SusanY1

I have the username and password for the Turbotax account of my deceased spouse, but can I use my own credit card to settle the upcoming payment? I would need to inform the bank about the death of my husband but was concerned if I can still access Turbo Tax, since the account was connected to my spouse's credit card.

Thank you so much.
