If you are using the Desktop software (CD/Download), you can re-name your file by clicking on the File menu, choose Save As.  If you want to pull it up in the software, you would have to choose Find a .tax file and then click on it to open (or choose File, Open tax return). You will not lose your free state.

You can also just choose to start a new return to start over, you would still have the free state program.  Choose File menu, choose New Return.

@Romper removing the state return does not remove the State program so it will only remove the state return from the return only.  If you have another State program then you can use that state instead of the one you deleted.  With the Desktop version there is only one free State program, to add another state there is a charge.

Once you have done a Save As can you use the File/Remove State Return to remove the current free state and replace it with another free state for that file. Is there a charge for the replacement? Does Removing the free state return remove it from other files or just the Save As file?
