You may claim your daughter as your dependent if she lived with you the entire year and didn't make more than $4,050 last year.
There are two types of dependents, "Qualifying Children" (QC) and standard "Qualifying Relative". Only a QC qualifies a taxpayer for the Earned Income Credit. See the requirements below for Qualifying Relative:
Qualifying relative
- They don't have to be related to you (despite the name).
- They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.
- They are a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
- They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.
- They lived with you the entire year.
- They made less than $4,050 in 2017.
- You provided more than half of their financial support. More info
When you add someone as a dependent, we'll ask a series of questions to make sure you can claim them.

My girlfriend's 33 year old son has been living in her basement for 3 years. He has no job and did not file a tax return last year. His medical insurance has been free through the MA state program for that period.Three months ago he moved out. He has just received notice that he will have to pay for it now. He claims that it is because he was claimed by his mother as a dependent on her taxes.
Is the tax status related to the insurance change?

@dennisrawley -- Yes, tax status can definitely affect a person's eligibility for Medicaid. You can read all the details in this web reference: http://www.healthreformbeyondthebasics.org/key-facts-determining-household-size-for-medicaid-and-chi...
See Figures 1 and 2 in particular.
