Can I import a Mac formatted .tax2015 data file into a 2016 TurboTax program formatted for Windows 10? If so, how?

We used Home and Business for Mac for 2015, downloaded online.  This year, we are planning to use Premiere for Windows, which will also be downloaded online.

A *.tax2015 data file can be used by either Mac or Windows version of the TurboTax software.

You can transfer the 2015 data file into a new Windows 2016 return.

You'll need to copy the *.tax2015 data file to the Windows computer.  You can use a flash drive or CD-R.  The best place to put the data file is in the \My Documents\TurboTax folder, which is the default folder.   That folder will be created when you install the 2016 product for Windows.

After you install your 2016 TurboTax for Windows, restart your computer.   Then launch TurboTax and get the latest updates.   Choose to Begin a new return.   The software will churn and search your computer for the *.tax2015 data file.  If it finds it, it will ask you if you want to transfer it in.   If it doesn't find it, you can use the Browse link to point the program to the location of the data file.

Here are some tips on installing the 2016 TurboTax on your Windows computer from a download:

  • You must install using Administrator privilege.
  • First disconnect from the Internet so you can safely disable your antivirus and firewall software programs.
  • Close any other open programs.
  • Double-click the downloaded installation file to launch the installer.
  • After installing, be sure to re-enable your antivirus and firewall programs before connecting back up to the Internet.
  • Reboot (restart) your computer.
  • Open TurboTax and run the updater.

What about doing the same in reverse?  I.E., transfer turbotax 2015 data from a Windows to a Mac in order to use to prepare 2016 return on a mac.

Yes, the .tax files work on both Windows or Mac.  Do you have the 2016 program installed on the Mac?  Copy the .tax2015 file to the Mac Documents.  Then start a new 2016 return and it should find 2015 to transfer.
