To qualify for the child tax credit, the child must be your son, daughter, stepchild, foster child (placed in your home by an authorized placement agency or by a court order), adopted child, brother, sister, stepbrother, stepsister, half-brother, half-sister, or a descendant of any of them (for example, a grandchild or niece/nephew).
