Free Edition is free as long as you file a 1040EZ (or 1040A with the standard deduction) and don't select any add-ons or upgrades.

Is the state program and efile free as well?  When I sign in it only gives me options to buy the program for a minimum of $40?  How do I access the free program?

The free state filing does not work even with filing the 1040ez.  They put you in a loop by design so they can charge tomorrow, as the free state file ends today... pretty savvy
