Can I claim my disabled mother? I've given her (via bank transfer) a little more than half of what she makes with SSDI.

As the question states, my mom makes about 30k with SSDI and I'll have given her, via bank transfer, a little over half of what she makes with SSDI (15-16k). I don't think that counts for paying 50% of her care, right? She uses the money to pay bills and buy groceries.

Since you are not providing over one-half of her support, you cannot claim her as your dependent under the Qualifying Relative rules.

To claim an adult parent as a dependent, they do not need to live with you, but you must provide more than half their total support (including housing, food, clothing, medical and travel expenses).

If she lived with you, then in addition to cash support you could count a portion of your rent or mortgage, utilities, and other housing costs as support you provide to her, and then you add everything up and see whether you provide more or less than half her support.

But based on the facts as you state them, you can't claim her as a dependent.
