Can I claim my child if he was living in a group home most the year?

You can claim your Child as a dependent for 2018 if ALL of these qualifications are met:

  • He is a citizen of the US
  • He is related to you
  • He has income of less than $4,150
  • He is not claimed as a dependent by anyone else
  • He is not filing a joint return
  • You provided more than 1/2 of his support.  Keep in mind, that if his living expenses for the group home are funded through a third party such as Medicare, Medicaid or another State Program, it is unlikely that you provided over 1/2 of his support.  However, if you pay the cost for your child to live at the group home, then you are most likely the one that provided over 1/2 of his support.  If you are unsure, you can use this IRS Worksheet for Determining Support to calculate your child's total support for the year.
