Get the Senior Deduction on  YOUR return?  No.  Only on her return if she files a return, but not if she is claimed as a dependent

To claim her she need to have less than $5,200 of income not counting Social Security.    Who can you claim

Yes, she yould still have to file her own tax return, and she would still get the $6,000 swenior deduction.  However,

  • Doing so may prevents her from claiming the federal Credit for the Elderly or Disabled herself
  • Claiming her can allow you to take other tax benefits, such as the $500 Credit for Other Dependents, a Head of Household filing status, or deductions for her medical expenses.
