If your son is under the age 24 and a full-time student and if he didn't provide more than half of his own support for the year, you can claim him as a dependent.
If your son is 24 and older, you must have provided more than half of his support and his gross income must be less than $4050 in order to be able to claim him.
And of course, if you can claim him, he should not claim himself when he files his own tax return. He should indicate that is being claimed by someone else. Otherwise, your tax return will be rejected.
