Yes, you can still take the sales tax you paid on any major purchase if you meet the filing requirements to file your own taxes.  Since your parents are claiming you on their return, on your return, under My Info, make sure you mark 'Someone else can claim you on their tax return'

Please note that your refund will change only if your total sales tax deduction ( including the portion paid on your major purchase) is more than the state income taxes and you are itemizing instead of taking the standard deduction. If your total state income taxes payments are more than the total paid sales tax, you will not be able to deduct the sales tax from your new car ( The program will default you to take the state income tax deductions )

In case I am not itemizing, can my parents claim sales tax on my major purchase as they are claiming as their dependent?
