Can F1 and F2 file jointly as resident alien?

I'm currently a student on F1 visa starting 2014. My wife was on F1 starting 2014 but finished her program on 2017 summer, she finished her OPT on 2018 summer, then we got married and she changed to F2.

Under such circumstances, if we are going to file tax for 2018, are we considered resident alien?

Can F1 and F2 file jointly as resident alien?

You are not yet a resident alien but will be one for the 2019 tax year.

If your wife was on an F1 student visa while she finished her OPT, and then changed to F2, then she was still a nonresident for 2018.

You will both still need to file nonresident returns.

TurboTax does not support nonresident returns.

However we have a partnership with Sprintax offering a nonresident tax filing solution to our TurboTax customers.

Visit the TurboTax/Sprintax site for more info or to get started.
