Bug report on 2210 and E-filing instruction page on federal return_HI, When I am getting to preview of the federal copy, I noticed the system show that I have to make estimated tax payment into 2024 on quarterly basis. What happened?

This is the first time I have seen the system showed up this one when we are ready to file. Is this a system bug? I didn't select to pay estimate tax in 2024.

Assuming you are not self employed (which would definitely trigger this) the most likely reason is that you owed more than $1,000 on your tax return so you will have to make payments to avoid a penalty next year. If you have taxes taken out of your paycheck you should consider completing an adjusted W4 with your employer. You can see if ttax created a form 2210 in your return, that should give you a clue. There are other variables (e.g. if you are a fisherman or farmer by trade) but assuming that you work for an employer and receive a W2 you probably just didn't have enough taxes taken out during the year

The estimated tax payments may have been scheduled if you owe more than $1,000 in tax, as mentioned by @Eckythump. That is the threshold under which you won't likely get a penalty for late payment of tax. You are not required to make the payments, but if you don't make them you may be penalized for late payment of tax. The general rule is you need to pay in 100% of the tax on your previous year tax return or 90% of the tax for the current tax year on a quarterly basis. If you think you have enough tax paid in from withholdings, you don't need to make the estimated tax payments. You can see your previous year federal tax amount on line 24 of your form 1040. You can subtract the credits on lines 27 through 29 if they apply to you.

To view your form 1040 and schedule 1 to 3:

  1. Choose Tax Tools from your left menu bar in TurboTax Online
  2. Choose Tools
  3. Choose View Tax Summary
  4. See the Preview my 1040 option in the left menu bar and click on it
  5. Choose the Back option in the left menu bar when you are done

Hi, Turbotax team and the members support here,

I am sure this is a "system bug". My tax summary shows that I had paid tax $25943 against the current year tax $24831. I pulled out the 2210 and saw the item 7 is -1,112 which means the system is not supposed to generate the form 2210 and asked for estimated tax. Shall I manually click on item 9 in the 2210 form on "No" to give the system clear instruction not to generate the form?

The program had an update this morning so I am sure it has something to do with this update. Please review.

Hi, Turbotax team,

I have manually removed 2210 form on my file. However the "electronic filing instruction for federal return still shown the estimated tax payment schedule which is not supposed to be there. When can the team fix this bug please? Tks

If you don't believe you need to pay estimated taxes for 2024, you can ignore the quarterly estimated tax payment forms created by TurboTax. Even if you believe you need to pay quarterly estimated taxes, you can ignore the amounts on the TurboTax forms and pay whatever amount you think you need to pay if any.

The only reason to pay quarterly estimated taxes is to avoid an underpayment penalty. Generally, most taxpayers will avoid this penalty if they either owe less than $1,000 in tax after subtracting their withholding and estimated tax payments, or if they paid at least 90% of the tax for the current year or 100% of the tax shown on the return for the prior year, whichever is smaller. The amount is 110% of the tax shown on the return for a prior year AGI of more than $150,000.
