Both my wife and myself are over 65; but the standard deduction is saying $34,000 and not the $46,000 that should be in place; How do I correct this?

The $12,000 is a separate line from the standard deduction. It is above the line so it comes off before your standard deduction or itemized deduction is factored in. If eligible you will find this on Schedule 1-A Part V and line 13b of your form 1040.  TurboTax will automatically calculate it based on your date of birth and your income.

For Tax Year 2025 through 2028, seniors may claim an additional deduction of $6,000 per taxpayer over 65.  This is NOT a refundable credit.  This is a deduction of your income.

  • If your income is above $75,000 ($150,000 if Married filing jointly) the bonus deduction decreases by $.06 for every dollar over the relevant amount.
  • This deduction is available whether you itemize or take the standard deduction.
  • If your filing status is married filing separately you are not eligible for this deduction.
  • This bonus deduction is ONLY for those over 65, it does not apply to those who are blind and under 65

TurboTax will automatically calculate it based on your date of birth and your income.  There is not a special section or box to check.  Just enter your correct information and TurboTax will take it from there.  If eligible you will find this on Schedule 1-A Part V and line 13b of your form 1040.

Don't look for it in the same one-place on your Federal tax forms.

Look at your actual form 1040.

The SR Std Deduction  is on line 12e, and does not include the new $12,000 amount on the same line.

The form 1040 puts that 12,000 on a separate line 13b on the form 1040 (though that line can also contain a few other things....as calculated on the new Schedule 1-A)).

They put it in separately on your form 1040, because some folks earn enough income, such that the tax software has to phase-out the $$ amount allowed for the additional deduction.
