Blocked fraudulent filing with dependents name and parent e-filing

The IRS notified us by postal mail that someone attempted to file a tax return using my daughter's name. We verified the situation with the IRS and successfully blocked the fraudulent filing.

The IRS informed us that if my daughter needs to file her own tax return in the future, she will have to mail it in and will not be able to file electronically.

I am now preparing to file my own tax return and claim my daughter as a dependent. Will this incident affect my ability to e-file my return?

If you file your return electronically without the IP PIN, there is chance that the return might get rejected or that it will take longer to process.  The same possibility of delay is possible if you mail your return, plus mailed returns take longer to be processed.  Waiting for the IP PIN might be your best option.

If your daughter had issues with someone using her information, you should get an IP PIN for her and enter it in your return.  Per the IRS, If your daughter is under 18 or cannot setup an ID.me account you can submit Form 15227, Application for an Identity Protection Personal Identification Number online. The phone number provided on the form will be used to contact you to verify your identity before an IP PIN can be issued.

Once you get it, see the steps below to enter it on your return:

  1. Open your return
  2. Go to IP PIN
  3. On the Identity Protection PIN screen, answer Yes. Select Add and enter your IP PIN in the space provided.
  4. Select Continue, then select Done.

Thank you for your response. My daughter already has an ID.me account, but when trying to get an IP PIN, the page shows: “Unable to get a PIN at this time. The alternative is to submit an application.”

Submitting the application would take 4 to 6 weeks to receive the IP PIN.

Is it possible to e-file my tax return now without an IP PIN for my daughter (while claiming her as a dependent) and then submit the application for an IP PIN for future use?
