Best route for domestic partner?

My partner is pregnant and very early stages. Only  4 weeks. I am starting a new job next week and can add her as a DP since we have been living together for almost 4 years.

im scared of losing a lot of income on this as she does not work currently, so I am sole provider.

is the best option to add her as a DP and as a dependent since she hasn’t made any money yet this year?

is it better for her to just pursue Medicaid?

thanks for any info!

Which state do you live in?

The IRS does not recognize domestic partners.  What you choose to do with her for insurance does not affect your taxes, however, it is possible that your taxes could affect her insurance if you went the Medicaid route.  This would be a question for the insurer.

If she has not earned any income in 2025 and will not earn any income, then it is possible that you could claim her as a dependent on your return and get a $500 Non-Refundable Other Dependent Credit

Since she is 4 weeks pregnant, the baby would be born this year.  When it is, assuming the financial situation stays the same, you would be able to claim your child as a dependent and possibly receive the $2,000 child tax credit and file as Head of household which will up your standard deduction from $15,000 to $22,500 for 2025.

You cannot claim Head of Household by claiming your partner as a dependent since she is not a blood relative.

Thank you so much for the reply!

We are in Texas.

@Vanessa A So, I could claim her as a dependent if she does not make any income in 2025. Does it make any difference that she’s back in school and has fafsa money she received as a federal grant for school?

There is a big chance we get married before end of year so we could take advantage of head of household return.
