Being in a Domestic Partnership

My partner and I just entered a domestic partnership about a month ago. Will this affect how we do our taxes this year. We own a house together.

Should we split the mortgage on our taxes? She makes a lot more money than I do.

Is there anything special about taxes after paying property taxes for the first time?

Being in a Domestic Partnership

Congratulations!

If you can file jointly all income and expenses for your home including the mortgage interest and real estate taxes would be on the one return.

If not and you are 50/50 owners of your home you may each claim 50% (or any other percentage) of interest and taxes.  Since your partner makes more than you, it may make more sense for her to claim all of the expenses to get the bigger tax savings.  There are no special considerations regarding paying real estate taxes for the first time that I am aware of.
