Before it lets me file, it keeps telling me to fill out the adoptive child worksheet. we did not adopt and do not need to fill it out, however, it will not let me proceed

Need to go into your deductions and credits, find the adoptive child credit, and delete the information on that credit. This would also keep the form on your return. After deleting that deduction information it should let you delete the form and the from will stay off your return as it will have no information to add into the form.

You'll then need to go to and double check the form is still not listed.To do so follow the steps listed.

• Go to "My Account" > "Tools"
• Under the Tools Center, select "Delete a Form"
  
• Then delete the "Adoptive Child Worksheet"
