As a single file I‘m faced with 1/3 more tax in ‚18‘ although my numbers are almost identical to ‚17‘ — except for losing 50% of my itemized deductions. Is this possible?

Sure, there were significant reductions in (State/local incoem tax + Property tax) deductions...that is destroying taxes for a lot of people..Plus withholding % were reduced..and for some folks if they didn't bump it back up, you can owe a lot more at tax time.
