Are SSI disability payments taxable?
My sister lives in PA and just started receiving SSI disability payments every month. But she received a lump sum for a year’s worth of backdated payments as well. She has been out of work for several years now due to her disability. She has two kids under 18 and one in college. Her husband works but makes less than $30K a year. His income and her disability are their only sources of income.

Are SSI disability payments taxable?

Hello Sasha,

If you are receiving supplemental security income (SSI) payments then they are not taxable.

If you are collecting Social Security Disability Income (SSDI) then it may be taxable based on your other income.
