Hi, paper mailed a return the first week of April and tracking indicates it was received before the filing deadline. However, when the return receipt came back a few weeks later there was no signature or stamp. Tracking for the receipt shows it started making the journey back about 2 weeks after the return was delivered (which is a typical timeline since they don't actually sign the return receipts upon delivery due to the large volume of paper returns, instead each individual receipt apparently gets processed in the weeks following). So it seems the paper return was delivered but someone later in the process removed the return receipt and failed to sign or stamp it. This is really concerning because now there is no way to determine whether the return actually made it into the IRS processing pipeline or if instead something has happened to it...
Has anyone else received their return receipt back with no signature/stamp ???

Before COVID a person would sign for receipt. During COVID that practice ceased and there is no longer a physical signature. That change also affects other types of legal documents that no longer get human signatures.
Signatures being mandatory was temporarily suspended during Covid but this is no longer the case. Even then carriers would often put a code on the receipt indicating it was delivered. All certified return receipts are now again supposed to be signed or stamped. I have always recieved a stamped receipt when filing paper returns even during the two years of Covid - but not this year. If you have any proof to back up your claim that a sig/stamp is no longer part of the required mailing process please share.
Thanks.
