Amount of Extension Payment Made for 2020

hello.. 

even though I never requested any type of extension or made any payment, I see an amount in the following:

"If you made an extension payment in 2021 for your 2020 federal return, enter the amount below."

"2020 federal extension payment made in 2021" $1500

Where did this $1500 come from?  How do I fix this?

1. Deductions and credits
2. estimates and other taxes paid
3. Income taxes paid
4. Payments with 2020 federal extension

Where is this asking you?  I can't think of where it might need that in 2021 return.  Is it asking about a State extension payment?  Can you post a screen shot?

Exactly what is happening to us.  Concluded it is a program glitch, related to the amount of 2021 federal refund being applied to 2022 taxes.  The amount matches and can not be changed when the refund amount applied is manipulated.  Now the question, how to fix it?  We also did not do a "2020 federal extension payment made in 2021"

This is in the 2020 Refund Applied to 2021 section

I clicked on 2020 refund applied to 2021 federal taxes.

It then asks me how much of my 2020 federal refund I applied to 2021 federal taxes. 

The next screen is Amount of Extension Payment Made for 2020.  The amount is already populated.  See screen shot :

Many people choose to pay part of their tax due when they file an Extension Request.

If this does not apply to you, you can delete the amount TurboTax filled in for you.

However, if you did make a tax payment when you applied for your 2020 extension (and used TurboTax) that's the amount showing in the box that was filled in for you.

Still need help!

1) We did not file an extension in 2020, nor did we use turbo tax.

2) We are Not able to delete or change the amount in the turbo tax box from that screen.(see other's screenshot above) 

3) We have found the only way to make that box zero is not to apply any of the 2021 refund to 2022.  Even if a partial amount of refund is chosen to be applied, this box auto populates that exact amount.

This is our first year using turbo tax, using a accountant for the past 20 years

We would like to take a deeper look at this. However, I need a diagnostic file which is a copy of your tax return that has all of your personal information removed. You can send one to us by following the directions below depending on which TurboTax version you are using:

TurboTax Online:
1. Sign into your online account.
2. Locate the Tax Tools on the left-hand side of the screen.
3. A drop-down will appear. Select Tools
4. On the pop-up screen, click on “Share my file with agent.”
5. This will generate a message that a diagnostic file gets sanitized and transmitted to us.
6. Please provide the Token Number that was generated in the response.

TurboTax Desktop/Download Versions:
1. Open your return.
2. Click the Online tab in the black bar across the top of TurboTax and select “Send Tax File to Agent”
3. This will generate a message that a diagnostic copy will be created. Click on OK and the tax file will be sanitized and transmitted to us.
4. Please provide the Token Number that was generated in the
response

File was sent... working on Mac desktop version (have disc for home and business), so directions were different.  Regarless,  how and to whom do I give token number to??  surely I don't post it in the tread, right?

As VolvoGirl says, it's safe to post the token here.

The process of getting the token causes TurboTax to create a sanitized version of your return (names, addresses, and other personally identifiable information is x'd out), and the resulting tax file is stored in a TurboTax database. The "token" is a number that points to where that sanitized tax return is. 

Furthermore, no one outside the Intuit VPN can log in and get the sanitized file, which no longer contains any information that can be misused anyway.

To recap the problem.  When you apply 2021 refund to 2022 taxes turbotax puts that exact amount into "Amount of Extension Payment Made for 2020" which is false and can not be erased by highlighting and deleting.  The only option is to take the refund and not apply it to 2022 taxes.  This can be done but not my preferred course. 

Is turbotax looking into this program error any further?
