This is more of a technical question than it is tax advice. I have TurboTax 2023 Delux Desktop with all the latest update. It's close to end of calendar year 2024 and I realize I likely did not file my taxes correctly to get the most of what our tax system offers for being a landlord with a rental property with newly installed solar panels. So I went back in and select 'Amend Return' and filled out Form 3468 manually since there weren't interview questions for it in the business section. There's several problems that proceeded. 1. I was not able to file it electronically after 10/15/2024 - not exactly a big deal. 2. The program didn't produce a 1040-X for me. 3. The credits, since I didn't owe any money, should have been carried over, which looks like none of that was done. It just printed what I filed electronically back in April 2024. What's going on with TurboTax 2023? Curious if the program isn't finished in terms of development for filing business tax credits with this specific form.
I haven't even looked at the State amendment for New York, but it looks like a mess too.

Just an update on my quest to get this nailed.
You need to get the latest TurboTax 2023 update. If you started an amendment and you don't see your 1040-X form, you need to take a fresh copy from backup from BEFORE you started the amendment. I'm not sure if simply deleting work and restarting will get you the right result. It's quite a dilemma with that bug I ran into. I started the amendment before they pushed out the fix, but thankfully I had a backup.
Filing Steps (so far):
Federal - Manually add the 3468 form and fill it out. There's nothing fancy about this form and this section did not get so much attention to having interview questions. On the 1040-X, you need to apply it to 2024. You won't get money back as a result because this credit is a carryforward non-refundable for up to 5 years, which means it does not pay out if your net tax obligation is already zero or you're getting a refund.
State - Manually add IT-255. There is an issue I still need to follow up on with a call for help - how to get this to do a carry forward because I had no tax liability. So far, the program has me set up with the solar tax credit paid out, but it is a non-refundable credit that can carry forward for up to 5 years.
It would be great if anyone can contribute to more details if any of this is incorrect. Thanks for reading.
