Amending a 2022 return - can it be done after April 15, 2026?

It is too late to do this by e-filing. Can I file "by paper" and regular mail past the three-year deadline after filing 2022 (April 15, 2023)?

Amending a 2022 return - can it be done after April 15, 2026?

You have three years from the original filing deadline of your return or two years after you paid the tax due (whichever is later) to file an amendment. If you amend your 2022 tax return after April 15, 2026, you may not receive a refund by amending your tax return. Refer to the TurboTax article How to File an Amended Tax Return with the IRS.

You can prepare your 2022 amendment using TurboTax if you used TurboTax to prepare your original tax return but you will have to print and mail it.

To amend your 2022 tax return using TurboTax Online follow the instructions below. Make sure you have a copy of your original federal and state tax returns.

  1. Sign in to your TurboTax account
  2. Under Tax Home, scroll down to Your tax returns & documents and select 2022
  3. Select Amend (change) return
  4. Select Amend Using TurboTax Online
  5. Follow the prompts on the next screens and answer the questions
  6. On the Tell us which 2022 return(s) you want to amend screen select which tax returns you want to amend and select Continue
  7. Once you indicate why you want to amend your return, the refund/balance due sets to $0
  8. Follow the prompts to amend your tax return

Thank you. The Ttax instructions also include info about when your amended return shows that you owe the IRS money.
