What's the deal? My amended return shows a refund due but also includes a payment voucher.
The details:
I just finished amending my 2021 tax return. Originally, my wife and I filed separately. We just amended to file jointly. This was the only alteration.
When we initially filed our 2021 returns (separately) it turned out that she was due a refund, and I owed a bit. We took care of all that then. Everything was handled on time. Our current balance with the IRS is zero.
Now, the confusion...
When I look at the 2021 amended paperwork printout that TurboTax just generated, I see on the first page instructions that: "Your federal tax return (Form 1040-X) shows a refund due to you in the amount of $1,716.00." Great, but...
When I scroll to the next page in the PDF, there is a "Payment Voucher" for "$619", and it says, "Use this voucher when making a payment with Form 1040." (Huh, I thought amended returns were all about 1040 X?)
Farther down, Form 1040 Line 37 states that "Amount you owe" is "$619" (Remember, this is an amended return. What is going on?...).
But then, farther below that on Form 1040 X, Lines 21 and 22 state that the amount "overpaid" and available to be "refunded" is "1,716" (all of which I definitely want refunded).
So... This begs the question -
I'm due, a refund, yes? And, if so, why is a "Payment Voucher" included? I'm not supposed to send any payment in, am I? (If a payment was due, wouldn't that just be subtracted from the refund?)

Go by the actual 1040X. Line 18 should be your original refund amount and line 22 should be your additional refund. If you paid on your original return it will be on line 16. If there is an amount owed with the amendment, it will be on line 20.
Ignore the 1040V. That is for the original return or what the original return would have been if it didn’t need correcting.
