Amend already filed Tax 2024

I need to file 1040X to amend 2024 Tax return. I have already filed the Tax back in February 2025 and paid the calculated penalty.

I had to re enter all Tax information (W-2s, 1099, etc) into TurboTax again now since I didn't have the old 2024 TurboTax file. TurboTax is now calculating the penalty based on this year, which is more than I already paid.

Do I leave the penalty as is since I already paid the correct amount in 2025 and just start with the 1040X to correct what needs to be corrected?

I don't see an option in TurboTax to manually adjust the penalty (should be lower since it was already paid).

Yes, you can ignore the penalty amount.  Penalty amounts for the underpayment of estimated tax are calculated by IRS whether or not there is an amount included on the tax return for the penalty.  You won't have to pay the additional penalty.  You can also go to Forms view and select Form 2210 and input the amount you paid the paid the tax due on the original return on line D at the top of page 1 of the form.

Thank you. I noticed on form 1040X Column B. Net change shows 0, however Columns A (Original amount) and C (Correct amount) both show the new corrected numbers. TurboTax also created a new 1040 with the new numbers. Does this sound right?

What forms are transmitted via TurboTax to the IRS? The new 1040 and 1040X and new State forms?

When you re entered your info again did you use the original info from 2024?  Why are you amending?  You needed to recreate the new 1040 return to match the original 1040 you actually filed.  So the amended return should show changes.  And did you use the 2024 program?

To amend a return you did somewhere else or you don't have the original .tax file, you would first have to fill out Turbo Tax like you are doing the original return and pay for it. You have to recreate the actual wrong original return. Then when it matches each line that you really filed you have to tell Turbo Tax you will mail it so it thinks it was filed. Then you can amend it.

If you didn't  use the Online version or don't have the .tax2024 file you would need to use the 2024 Desktop program to  recreate the 2024 original return.  If you don't have the Desktop program or can't reinstall it, you would have to buy the prior year Desktop program here. They only sell the last 3 years. You need a full Windows or Mac computer to install it on

And for the amounts and forms.....

Go by the actual 1040X. Line 18 should be your original refund amount and line 22 should be your additional refund. If you paid on your original return it will be on line 16. If there is an amount owed with the amendment, it will be on line 20.

Ignore any 1040V voucher that prints out and the new 1040. Those are what your return would have been if you had not needed to amend.

I did enter all the original information and that did create the correct original 1040.

I need to amend to add a 1099-INT.

I used TurboTax to start an amendment after that. The end result is what I described in the prior post. It changes the 1040 with the new numbers and the 1040X not showing the net change in Column B

Try doing the amended return over.   Go to Forms mode and delete the 1040X.

Then go back to the step by step  interview mode and delete the new 1099INT and put  your return back to the way it was originally filed.  Be s ure to check it matches the filed return.

Then start the amended return again.  Don't enter the 1099 until after you amend.  It sounds like you entered the new 1099 before you started amending the first time.

So I start with the Amendment and enter everything from there?

Not everything.  Once you get back to the 2024 return originally filed,  then start the amended return, go to Federal - Other Tax Situations - Other Tax Forms - Amend a return

THEN you just enter the new 1099 after you start the amendment process.

Oh,  If your 1099INT doesn't change the tax due or refund you don't have to amend.

Thanks, deleting the 1040X and readding it fixed it.

The new issue I am having is Turbo Tax won't let me E-file saying the original return must have been E filed as well. The original return was E-filed, but for the amendment I had to reinstall the 2024 version.

Advise?

Thank you

Prepare the return for mailing. It seems it will not be recognized the original return was e-filed.
