Am I REQUIRED to buy your personal business product to literally claim ONE expense????

I took a side job of $1400. I have a 1099. It cost me $610 in materials (I have receipts) to do the job. When I entered the $1400, (my taxes were complete when I entered) it took $600 from my fed/state refund total. I have literally LOST money on this deal, and turbo tax wants me to pay an additional $90 so I can put my ONE expense in.

Yes, if you use  TurboTax Online, the Self-Employed is the recommended version for those filing Schedule C and Schedule C-EZ.

The lower versions of TurboTax Online, such as Deluxe or Premier, have very limited business expense support -  if your business only claims standard vehicle mileage, phone expenses, and/or miscellaneous expenses up to $100.

Since your business expenses exceed the $100 amount, you'll need to upgrade to TurboTax Online Self -Employed.

Your other option is to use TurboTax Desktop Deluxe version.  This has more extensive business expense support versus its comparable online version.
