Am I able to deduct lawyer fees my home owners association charged me and my account and I paid in 2017 for court filings they filed against me?

Is property a rental? personal residence?  Was lawsuit protection of income or source of income?

It is a 100% rental that I do receive a 1099 for and I would believe for protection of income. As they hired legal counsel to have my tenant vacated. I got a lawyer as well and we settled the dispute but I still ended up having to pay the legal fees.

Great, if this is rental then it a rental deduction as the costs was incurred as 1) a rental business expenses and 2) to protect the income on the rental. 

If you do see a category for the expense go to bottom one, "Any Miscellaneous Expenses."
