Why do I have to use the online version of turbo tax to import stock data from broker? i already spent $79 for the CD versio9n.

You must have misunderstood. You do not have to purchase another copy of TurboTax to import your stock data. If you are using 2017 desktop Premier--which you appear to be posting from, then you go to the section for entering that data and import it from your broker.
Go to Federal>Wages & Income>Investment Income
(You are not trying to use a 2016 CD, are you?)
